Paradox Coaching is a unique approach developed by Dr. Brad Allen Johnson, PhD, that integrates existential philosophy and psychology. It’s designed to help you navigate life’s uncertainties, explore deeper meaning, and cultivate authentic living. Through open dialogue and thought-provoking questions, Paradox Coaching creates a space for clarity, courage, and transformative growth.
At the heart of this approach lies the recognition that life is filled with paradoxes—seeming contradictions that hold profound truths. We crave freedom, yet we long for security. We want to belong, yet we fear losing ourselves in others. We dream of endless possibilities, yet we are confronted by the limits of time, energy, and mortality. These paradoxes aren’t problems to be solved—they’re tensions to be held, explored, and lived through with intention.
In Paradox Coaching, we don’t shy away from these tensions. Instead, we lean into them, exploring how each paradox invites you to make choices that align with your values. The necessity of choice is central to living authentically. Every choice closes one door and opens another, and every path taken leaves others unexplored. But within these choices lies the opportunity to create a life rich with meaning and purpose.
Paradox Coaching offers more than quick fixes or surface-level solutions—it’s an invitation to step into life’s complexities with clarity and intention. It’s about learning to hold opposing truths, embracing the discomfort of uncertainty, and finding courage in the face of difficult decisions.
In the end, life isn’t about eliminating paradoxes—it’s about learning to live with them fully, intentionally, and authentically.

Science – My coaching is grounded in a strong scientific foundation, particularly in social psychology and existential psychology. My background includes extensive research experience, which gives me an evidence-based perspective on human behavior, motivation, and the complexities of identity and values. I respect both the power of research to inform our lives and the limitations of what can be universally applied. In our work, I’ll draw from well-supported insights and tools that are adaptable to your unique experiences and goals, helping us navigate with clarity and focus.
Philosophy – In today’s fast-paced world, philosophy provides a needed depth, offering tools to reflect and resist the noise of misinformation and manipulation. Rather than providing set answers, an existential approach creates a space for you to explore what truly matters to you. This perspective helps you look beyond the surface, connecting to the bigger questions that shape who you are and where you want to go.
Phenomenology – I recognize that each person’s perspective is shaped by their own experiences, values, and beliefs. Our coaching will center on your reality, where you are the expert of your own life. While I bring evidence-based strategies, I respect your insight to discern what works best for you. Our work together will be about listening to yourself more clearly, filtering out the distractions, and finding the path forward that feels right to you.
Optimism – In an existential sense, optimism is about more than hoping for positive outcomes; it’s about embracing life’s unpredictability with openness and resilience. This approach recognizes that life doesn’t have to be “make-or-break” or “do-or-die”—there’s room for exploration, growth, and yes, even a bit of humor along the way. Positive emotions can lift our perspective, energizing us to meet challenges with curiosity rather than dread. While there will be moments of discomfort (often a sign of growth), we’ll approach each step with a sense of possibility and a willingness to engage fully. Embracing this flexible optimism allows us to find strength, joy, and meaning in the journey itself, wherever it may lead.

Coaching and therapy share some similarities, but they are distinct practices with different focuses. Therapy often looks at healing past wounds, addressing mental health conditions, and providing clinical treatment. Coaching, on the other hand, is future-focused and action-oriented. Paradox Coaching specifically emphasizes helping you clarify your values, explore life’s big questions, and make meaningful choices aligned with your goals. While therapy might address why you feel a certain way, coaching often focuses on how you can move forward effectively. Both can be incredibly valuable, and sometimes they even complement each other.

Coaching is a transformative conversation focused on your aspirations and your journey towards becoming who you want to be. It is a dialogue rooted in openness and honesty, where you are free to discuss anything without fear of judgment. As your coach, I am dedicated to supporting you fully, even when I challenge you or provide tough feedback.
In our sessions, you’ll find a safe space to reflect, question, and deepen your understanding of yourself and your life. Through exploration, we’ll build a solid foundation of self-awareness, empowering you to make courageous and informed decisions. While I will support you unconditionally, I won’t judge your choices or take responsibility for your actions. Life is complex and full of challenges, and though I can’t prescribe the best path for you, I can help you uncover your own best answers.
If you are committed to living your best life, I will be your companion, helping you make sense of your inner world and the world around you, empowering you to face challenges head-on.

Anyone can work with a coach. However, you will particularly benefit if you can answer any of the following questions with “yes”:
Do you find yourself procrastinating about something?
Do you feel stuck or discontent in your job, relationship, or life situation?
Are you finding it difficult to adjust to recent changes or responsibilities?
Do you often feel bored or unmotivated?
Do you feel that you have limited influence on where your life is going?
Do you want to stop going with the flow/following the herd and do your own thing?
Do you feel you have lost your purpose due to changes or loss?
Do you feel a particular inner conflict or dilemma?
Do you often feel misunderstood by people?
Do you feel you have lost or are about to lose your integrity?
Do you often find yourself doing things that you don’t really want to do?

Rather than locking us into a rigid weekly schedule, I prefer a flexible approach that respects your time and commitments. We’ll decide on the timing, location, and frequency of our sessions based on what works best as we move forward.
Once you book your initial consultation, I’m committed to being in your corner until you reach your goal, our agreed time period comes to a close, or you decide to wrap up our coaching journey. I don’t offer refunds, so I encourage clients to commit to at least three months, depending on the scope of what you want to achieve.
Ultimately, the pace is yours to set. Whether you’re focused on quick progress or reaching for something big, we’ll shape our work to match your ambitions and keep momentum moving toward your vision.

Existential philosophy and psychology are the cornerstones of my academic research, coaching practice, and overall approach to life. At its core, existentialism grapples with fundamental human questions: How should we live? What does it mean to truly be alive and coexist with others? It dives deep into the human condition, acknowledging life’s inherent challenges and the universal experience of anxiety.
Life often confronts us with profound difficulties: facing mortality, feelings of isolation, the weight of uncertainty, the search for meaning, and the overwhelm of choice. It’s natural to feel anxious in the face of these realities. In fact, if we’re not feeling any anxiety, we might be shielding ourselves from these truths to avoid discomfort. But a life spent purely in pursuit of happiness and comfort can leave us unfulfilled.
The good news is that we can learn to accept—and even find value in—our anxiety, using it as a catalyst to experience life more deeply and authentically. Existential thinking invites us to examine our values, confront our contradictions, and understand our personal boundaries. It’s about embracing the full spectrum of our human experience with courage and curiosity.
While not every coaching session will delve into deep philosophical exploration, existential concepts provide a powerful backdrop. They enrich our understanding of ourselves and the world, helping us navigate life’s complexities with clarity and intention. This approach creates a space where you can feel fully seen, deeply understood, and empowered to make meaningful choices.
